I’ve been crocheting for almost a year now and I’m beginning to learn some truths from this craft. I’ve been working on granny squares recently, trying to use up some of my ‘stash’ of yarn. They are fairly easy and quick to make and should work up into a very nice afghan or throw when I’m done. But, beyond that, there is something very soothing about the repetitiveness of the pattern, something calming and satisfying. I know now why our mothers, grandmothers and aunts have crocheted for years. Yes, crochet produces beautiful, useful objects, but it is also like a type of therapy. When crocheting, I can focus completely on the craft, blocking out everything else. So, today’s crochet isn’t ‘our grandmother’s crochet’, but I’m sure, like so many, they too, enjoyed the creative outlet this craft provides.
